Construction and Placement

Construction and Placement
We constructed our letters to show power and strength. We decided
to make our letters wider at the bottom to show as if the letters
were planting themself after conquering something. They are gold
to show power and royal. And we kept them open in the middle to
show the depth of through the letters.
We wanted to have the letters to be placed on top of
something or high up or going up to show them conquering,
gaining power (attention) and being victorious.

group

Group Work
Lynne, Evan, Grace and I, worked well together the first group project so
the second group project was easy for us to communicate and come up
with ideas. We all were basically on the same page of how we wanted or
project to look like and it ended up with the type of pictures we wanted .
The only problem we had was deciding on how we wanted the big letters
to look like all the girls in the group wanted the letters to be open with
oneside gold and the back side to be black like a drop shadow on the
font. Evan wanted them to be solid and gold. After all of us debating and
photoshopping our letter ideas to get an idea of what they all would look
like. We decided to keep the solid on the side and open in the middle to
show depth to the letters

Parts of the Projects
•The most difficult thing about this project was the our word
really isn’t a verb, it is almost like a describing verb. So coming
up with ideas to show conquer conquering was kind of a
challenge. We all came up with the same idea of overlapping
or being up high or going up was a way of conquering.
•Alot of our letters are curved or are practically circle so when
we were building them it was a challenge to glue and try
to hold like 3 different sides of the letter and push down on
them all at the sametime.
•When we were looking for spots we wanted to place them
on top of buildings or in the stadium to seem like the conquered
the attention around and be up high looking down on
everything. Unfortunatly we never could get permission to
get on any roofs or into the stadium.

Photo essay reflection

Photography Essay
In history photography was seen that it did best at showing the
exactness of the subject, that it saved time and labor for the artist.
Later photography began to be the start of pop culture news
such as magazines and newspapers. They showed images as
well as the stories to show the complete news.
Photojournalism become a huge part in the world. Showing images
of events that were happening in the world would tend to
help while making the publics opinion about the current events.
I never really noticed that photojournalism helped me make opinions
of things that are happening now in the world. I suppose
just a description of events don’t always show the complete idea
of the events.

Parts of the letter

Parts of the Letter
I did not realize that were actual names for the different parts of
a letter. I assumed people just called them something but I did
not realize that they had a literally name for them. Baseline was
kind of a given on the meaning of that one.
But after I heard the proper name for them I started calling them
by their actual names such as the ascender, decender, and serifs
.

Project 3

Conquer
Definition:To be victorious, to gain by
force.
Project
Show the word’s letters that spell out
conquer showing the meaning of the
word. (Conquer Conquering)

Story Boards

We wanted our commercial to captivate the frustration with the original design of a toothpaste tube. And how stress free and easy our prototype is.

Interview Part 2

PART 2

Responds to the new look and Idea of our Prototype

“The Idea of gravity pushing down to get all the toothpaste out is creative.”

“I like that there is a button instead of squeezing.”

“Doesn’t seem like a possible idea.”

“I like the futuristic look.”

Interview Part 1

Interview Questions

What is a problem you face with the current toothpaste tube you use?

How do you think that a new designed tube to should be, to fix the problems you face?

Respond’s

“Top always gets gross and clogged.”

“Doesn’t need to be changed.”

“Push button please.”

“Hands free would be convenient.”

“Pumps on the bottle like a soap dispenser.”

“I don’t want to have to squeeze the tube.”

I noticed that would I would ask one of the interviewees to use the bottle how they usually would, they tend to squeeze the bottle especially from the middle.

What was Learned

What was learned?

I learned that just because it is an item that is solid just about everywhere that does not mean that is has a perfect design already.   Alot of the designs of a toothpaste tube, our society has settled with it being good enough when actually it could be improved. My group decided that the cap is easily lost, and that it leaves crustys at the tip. And that the bottle shape and material never allows one to get all the product out of it so you end up are wasting money.

Understanding Comics

Understanding Comics

·         Icon- Images used to represent a person, place, thing, or idea.

·         Non Pictorial- fixed and or absolute appearance, It doesn’t affect their meaning (Invisible Idea).

·         Pictures- Fluid and variables of the appearance differ from “real life” appearance.

·         Cartooning- abstract image.

·         A face is a mask, and in our society we try to put an (abstract) face on everything, from cars to objects.

Writer's Toolbox

Writer’s ToolBox

·         Brainstorming, mind maps, concept maps: initiating ideas and problem solving, They allow quick spontaneous idea flows.

·         Free Writing: Helps bring hidden thoughts to the surface.  Also it can reveal new ideas.  And helps to focus on specific ideas or questions.

·         Brainstorming: It helps with small groups to generate ideas.

Movie Objectified

·         The movie Objectified extremely interesting because it talked about how even though something’s are already made and designed “well” now , that does not mean that someone in the future could not come up with a better design for that object. That everything is basically made to be fixed.

·         One part that really made me think in that movie in particular was one of the chair designer said something along the lines of “ It’s ridiculous that there is millions and millions different types of chair designs made from the past to now and yet people still settle and buy uncomfortable chairs for no apparent reason.”

Project 2

Make it Better! Design for 5 bucks

Redesign a five dollar object: Find a five dollar object that in my eyes needs to be redesigned to become a well-designed object. Redesign the object by keeping the basic structure but fix the problems that seem to be wrong with the original design.

Project 2 Movie Reflection

  • The only thing not designed is nature
  • inventor- makes up the product
  • Designer- makes the product more user friendly
  • Process of applying total emerging
  • focused chaos
  • build on wild ideas

  • Project planning:
  1. study the anthropology
  2. understand the strenghts
  3. refine product
  4. implecate new product

Chromo

Harmonious Chromo
There is a range of chromo starting with a light pink flowing into the same hue but a darker shade of
the pastel purple.

Contrasting Chromo

There is a contrast of the forest green hue from the darker shade and lighter shade

values

Harmonious Values

The value scale shown in this ad is of the purple hue, it is harmonious because there is a nice flow of the value not a jumping from different tones.

Contrasting Value

There is a contrast because of no value change just a white background against the burnt orange color

hues

Harmonious Hues
The two colors shown (Blue and Orange) are harmonious because they are across from eachother on the color wheel so they compliment eachother and balance the ad’s color.

Contrasting Hues
There is a contrast of the bright green, red, and yellow against the black background.

Color Police

Good Use of color
Good use of color because there is one true color (the yellow couch) the rest are light chromos. The accent of the yellow makes the room look organized.

Bad Use of Color

This is a bad use of color because there is way to much colors trying to compete with eachother and it confuses your eyes on where to focus

Michael Graves

Did you know that Michael Graves was the designer of comon kitchen and bathroom objects as well as the tea pot I chose?  His line of products are sold at target.

Graves Is also an extremly well known architect that design building with a very fun, colorful and original style.

5 original objects

Yellow plastic mug
Gets to the point with a simple form.
No change in texture, just movement in the handle.
Simply one bright color.
Smooth and sleek.

Black Clutch
Gold latch adds deatail to a simple black clutch.
The belt like form going down the middle of the clutch vertically is a visual metaphor of contains the contend within.

Coral Makeup Brush
Half coral half brush (visually interesting).
Handle textures is a grip.
Unbalanced brush side up (the side you use).
But balanced visually with the three sections of texture.

Square Nail Polish Bottle
Bright color balances with the white square lid.
Square shape makes the bottle easier to open.
The square shape makes it more visually interesting.

Michael Graves Tea Pot.
Top heavy with interesting sights, but balanced with the reflection in the bottom half
Handle emphazies the spout, it moves your eyes that direction.
Grip on the handle is not tradional.

Don Norman

http://www.ted.com/talks/don_norman_on_design_and_emotion.html

Beauty- look of the design is appealing and even if it for functional use such as the juicer it is still considered art. The design is "neat and fun".

Functional- He describes the knife under the juicer and he talks about how its really sharp and the curve in the knife is to help with the handling of the knife.

Reflective- He says the design can tell you stories and talk about the emotion and the feelings you get from the design (visceral and behavioral).
